The Pacific garbage patch is a consequence of ocean pollution. The size of the pacific garbage patch is twice the size of Texas. It is 1.6 million square km. It is the biggest of the patches. It is because there is a big gyre there which sucks up the plastic. It is not an island of trash, a lot of the plastic is right beneath the water so you could drive through certain parts and not even know you were in the pacific garbage patch. The majority is fishing gear and nets. There are 5 more gyres around the world however the pacific garbage patch is by far the biggest.
In conclusion a lot of plastic is coming from littering and fishing gear being dropped into the ocean. This plastic is being spread around the world but clumped together in certain areas such as the pacific garbage patch.
